ENTERTAINMENT: DIVAS, CABARET, JAZZ THEN AND NOW. A triumph! Absolutely fascinating.

By Marlin Trevor From the International Herald Daily News

Out of the over one hundred books Mr. de Lafayette had written, “ENTERTAINMENT: DIVAS, CABARET, JAZZ THEN AND NOW” is my favourite. There has never been such a book. Many books exist about classical music and rock’n’roll, but Jazz and Cabaret? Never! The first of its kind! In this book you will find stories about the greatest American and International divas that you have never heard about before. Starting with the likes of Mata Hari and Mistinguett, Ana Held, Fay Templeton, and others of the golden era, to such living legends as Gloria Loring, Amanda McBroom and Diva Marlene VerPlanck whose picture graces the cover of this mammoth book – over seven hundred pages and weighs a ton – to new and emerging talents of the young and ambitious who will carry the torch of Jazz and Cabaret as it should be carried into the future. You cannot put the book down. Stories of gigolos, hustlers, shady characters of the night, greedy booking agents, struggling artists, gossip and altercations between great stars – it is so amusing, entertaining and satisfying, you will go on reading for a long time. And The pictures speak for themselves. The book is beautifully illustrated, so well that you feel you know the characters personally. But don’t think it is a frivolous book. Serious history of music, from the Colonial era and the cotton fields of America, to the last gig of a star in Manhattan, all this material is written in depth and encyclopaedic wealth of knowledge. One of the most unusual characteristics of this book are the interviews. The author interviewed zillions of mega stars and asked them the same questions, intentionally, as if each one was the only interviewee. Published in the book, the reader will understand the differences in character and persona, and the way of life of all those stars, because each answered the questions differently. To summarize, this is a not-to-miss book. It should be in the home of everyone who is interested in music, both professionals and those who simply love Jazz and Cabaret and want to immerse themselves in the lore and history of the genre. It will also teach you what make a diva tick! Buy it!

Maximillien de Lafayette’s “United States & The World Face To Face”: One of the best books in a decade!

Telling the Yanks how to behave themselves in other countries is something that most Europeans would love to do. By Nigel Huntington, Critic for the European Journal editor@europeanjournal.net

Do you believe you are worldly, attuned to the world and its changing mores, and just one dashing person who can manage anywhere? That’s what I used to think about myself until United States and the World Face to Face came my way. I am not sure I am exactly happy about reading it – my self esteem is slightly reduced and naturally one of my superior mind does not enjoy that – but the usefulness of the learned tome, which is also extremely amusing, outweighs the insult to my ego. It is a rather big book, almost seven hundred pages, so I decided to browse the table of contents first. But after a few minutes of that I succumbed to the inevitable and dived right in. My first encounter was a part that was telling Americans what to do, in no uncertain manner. I rather enjoyed that. Telling the Yanks how to behave themselves in other countries is something that most Europeans would love to do. But Old Nigel, I thought, does not need instruction on how to deal with Italians, French, or even Japanese. He knows how to get a meublé, should it be necessary, though naturally he prefers staying with friends for free, and he knows what food to order. Tipping properly is second nature, and surely he does not need to be told what Europeans or Asians or Middle-Eastern think about Americans. So I went on, rather smugly, enjoying the parts about nudity, dating, and managing the rising tide of violence in women who batter their husbands. But here I came across a significant segment – what to do if you want to date an American woman and take her out in style? You see, I thought I knew. But the information provided proved to me that I did have a lot to learn… so I decided to keep the huge volume by my bedside and study the subject in depth. Maximillien de Lafayette’s no fear of man or beast But as I continued browsing, I realized that taking the book with you on your trips may be even more valuable. The “best and worst” lists would tell you where to eat, where to stay, and what to do in almost every city you could think of. Given by a world traveller like Maximillien de Lafayette, and meticulously researched, the information is invaluable during trips taken for business or vacation. The political issues are handled in great depth, and much of it extremely controversial, something that de Lafayette seems to do in all his books, obviously having no fear of Man or Beast. Of course his readers expect it he is known for breaking barriers and dealing with taboo subjects. For example, I was stunned by his honest treatment of the Middle East, an area he knows first hand. The fun, for me, is in the diversity of the subjects. TV, politics, entertainment, great singers of jazz and cabaret, the best hotels and restaurants in the world, odd people, influential people, the most elegant hairdos of the year, magnificent women and eligible men, with surveys of what they want when it comes to just about everything from sex to university degrees. It is not possible to describe everything. You will just have to look at this book yourself, treating it as a guide to our changing universe.

Review From the International News Agency
Dr. Etienne LeRoux, Book Reviewer, International News A, 09/27/2006 Customer Rating for this product is 5 out of 5

In his new explosive book, United States and the World Face to Face, Maximillien de Lafayette predicts the winner of the race for The White House!

Reviewing the United States and the World Face to Face is a daunting task. The extent of information supplied in this huge book, almost seven hundred pages to be exact, could have been confusing. However, it is so interesting and entertaining, that you will find yourself going beyond seeking information and simply enjoy your browsing. There are not many books in the world that would give you such a variety of subjects, all written with the superb detail, attention to veracity and accuracy, and meticulous research that are the benchmark of the books of Maximillien de Lafayette. Where else would you find, between the covers of one book, articles about how to deal with and socialize with foreigners from around the globe, the fascinating lives of divas and femme fatales, the role of Americans in the international scene, policy and foreign affairs, and the secrets of successful dating? And believe me, this is just the tip of the iceberg. The style is funny, though quite authoritative, and the articles are written in depth. Much of the book is provocative, and for many readers, might be controversial. For example, not every one likes to read about American obsessions with certain subjects, or about the political tensions in areas which are not treated in the politically correct, dull fashion that so many authors are forced into in this climate. For example, many may like or dislike the author’s predictions of winner for the White House Race, 2008. But Mr. de Lafayette does not show fear. He is, as always, direct, honest, and sometimes even arrogant and shocking in his assumptions. Therefore, he is either loved or totally disliked – but always fascinating. You be the judge – but no matter how you feel about many subjects, you will enjoy the ride, and find the information, lists, and resources supplied in this mammoth book invaluable. I highly recommend it for both individuals and institutions.

Review by Peggy North from The London Monthly Herald

Maximillien de Lafayette's United States and the World Face Face to Face: Fun and authoritative.

    DON’T PANIC!

By Peggy North, Book Reviews, London Monthly Herald, London, UK

What do you expect from a good reference book in a world gone mad? Guidance, help, information, entertainment? Or perhaps all of the above? Well, in this book you will find it, whatever “it” means to you. It is a tour de force, an encyclopedic tome full of learning, and fun to boot. Yes, I know the title of my review is taken from Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, rest his beloved soul. It can’t be helped. I have never seen a book that works so much like the Guide, and serves the same purpose – it will stop you from panicking in strange situations. The only difference is that the Guide freely admit to being out of date on a regular basis, while United States and the World, Face to Face, is up to the minute and even anticipates some future events.  I suspect all of us feel a little bit lost these days. The world grows smaller, and at the same time more threatening every day. You have to manage business relationships with people whose country’s name sounds the name of a candy bar, maintain a civilized relationship with two or three ex-significant others and their children while dating some dashing person in New York or London, you must know how to tip a waiter in Latvia, and try to appear sophisticated in places where they think that all Americans are cowboys. And through all that you must look good, too. Would this book help you to do that? You bet it will.

I have never seen such a variety of subjects, lists and resources packed into one book. Granted, it is something like seven hundred pages and the type is not huge (at least not for a woman of my respectable age), but even so, who could expect such richness? You will find lists of embassies and other diplomatic services in many foreign countries. Divas, femme fatales, jazz and cabaret singers will enchant you, and they are approached in ways that are unusual to critics in this industry. You will learn why Americans like certain body parts more than others, and why people take their clothes off on request.  Most powerful and influential people, American and international are introduced, and you have guidance on what to do on an important and expensive date. The many articles are written in great detail and in depth and the research is meticulous. I could enumerate the subjects till daybreak, but why bother? Read it yourself. You will find that despite the fact that it is rather heavy, you will never leave home without it when you travel, and when you are at home, it will very likely live by your bedside for frequent browsing. Enjoy!
