ART AROUND THE GLOBE                                                                                 BY MAXIMILLIEN de LAFAYETTE, Senior Art Critic and Historian, Syndicated Columnist.

Should the UNESCO and the NOBEL PRIZE COMMITTEE decide to create a new category of awards, for instance  "World Art Prize", such award should and must be given to Piero Celona and Pasquale Celona. The Celonas are an international art phenomenon. Not because they are illustrious artists but,  BECAUSE they are the two pioneers, giants and Mecene of world art. Piero and Pasquale Celona are the Louis Pasteur and the Victor Hugo of contemporary and modern art. But who in heavens, are those two Celonas?

Photo: Pasquale Celona.

Pasquale is President of the Florence Biennale and President of its International Jury. Piero is the Vice President of the Biennale and responsible of its public relations. And possibly, the Biennale is the most prestigious art event of our time. De facto, Celonas' Biennale is a very unique art event. Unlike the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition which exclusively focuses on the work of the genius of 1812, or the Eurovision competition which gathers and honors Europe's best singers and performers, or the recent Brussels' Deixa Art Centre event which exclusively celebrates Belgium's greatest achievements in honor of the country's 175th anniversary, the Biennale brings together, artists  from all over the world, despite convergent and divergent differences in their  arts, styles, media, expressions, schools, genres, nationalities and cultures.

The  United Nations recognized the Florence Biennale as an official partner in the program “Dialogue Among Nations”. The UNESCO stated: "In this difficult times for humanity, art expresses a hope... opens new doors for learning, understanding, and peace among people and nations.” The Biennale is an immense universe of arts, artists, creativity, world-class talents, distinguished jury members, art critics and art historians, authors and scholars, colors, multidimensional cosmos of ideas, culture, civilization, learning and...beyond. It is rich and innovative in its concepts, spirit and nature, for it encompasses various media, facets, aspects and forms of arts, ranging from modern art to contemporary art, ornamental art, illustrative art, abstract, cubism, neo-cubism, surrealism, portraiture, landscapes, stills, quasi-installation, impressionism, Dadaism, classical, sculpture, new media, graphics, drawings, photography, you name it.

In addition to the depth and profound substance of its artistic fabric, the Biennale's jury committee embodied authoritative figures who have made their mark on the landscape of world art. Celebrities like the one and only, Barbara Rose and the legendary John T. Spike.

CELEBRITIES AND HONORED ARTISTS OF THE YEAR

Nations were initially born through the original expressions of individual and shared feelings, ideas, concepts and ideologies transmitted and illustrated through the medium of art. Equally true is the survival of nations and the preservation of their heritage, history and national pride through art in all its forms and styles.

No country will ever survive if its art dies. What’s left from the might and glorious past of Rome are not the centurions, the Roman saber or the military genius of Julius Cesar but, the temples, the frescoes, Via Apia, the Latin literature and the Roman law, in brief the Roman Art. What’s left from the illustrious history of the Egyptian civilization is not the military might of the Pharos, the bowed arch, the war chariots but, the pyramids of Giza, the temples of Luxor, the art treasures, the tomb paintings and unsurpassed ancient Egyptian architecture. In other words, the Egyptian Art. What’s left from the fabulous Hellenistic culture and history is not the formidable “Water Fire” of their mighty naval forces, the swords and shields of the Macedonians or the  strategic genius of Alexander the Great but, the glorious temples of Athina, the Pantheons, the teachings of Sophocles, Aristotle, the superb Greek statues, and the magnificent Greek frescoes, In short, the Greek Art! Thus, it is always proper and necessary to talk about art, to nourish art and to protect art in order to revive and preserve a nation. Art is an immortal human necessity. If art never existed, humanity would have not lasted throughout centuries.

From L to R: Cynthia Karalla, Andres Serrano, Vincenzo Balsamo, Jan Lynn Sokota, Joseph Nechvatal.

Members of L'Academie Française are called "Les Immortels", because of their ideas, writings, poetry, letters and humanistic arts. To me, any human who meaningfully contributes to the world of art, shares with the creator (s) of our universe a significant presence and pride on the landscape of creativity and the progress of humanity, BECOMES IMMORTAL. This year, I "encountered" remarkable people who enriched the world of art, who brought light, beauty, dynamism and warmth to the cosmos of colors, linens, canvases, delightful madness and hidden divinity of the parallel world of easels, brushes, tubes of paints, even turpentine...And those remarkable individuals who, this year,  made their mark on the world of art are Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Rick Prol, Vincenzo Balsamo, Salwa Zeidan, Jan Lynn Sokota, Piero Celona, Pasquale Celona, Andres Cerrano, Joseph Matar, Cynthia Karalla and Joseph Nechvatal.
